Residential Builders Continuing Competency Classes

Types of Construction & Height and Area Limitations

Based on the 2006 Michigan Building Code, this class covers the many changes to Chapter 5 and 6 while reviewing the basics of height and area limitations and types of construction.

Fire-resistance rated Construction 1

After a quick review of height and area limitations and ratings of structural elements, we will review how fire-resistance ratings are determined.  This will be followed by and in depth summary of the different types of Fire-resistance rated walls and floor ceiling assemblies.

Fire-resistance rated Construction 2

This class will cover an in depth review of how penetrations, construction joints openings in fire-resistance rated elements are treated.  We will also cover protection of structural members, concealed spaces, thermal and sound insulating materials and finally prescriptive and calculated fire resistance.

Fire and Smoke Dampers-Location Requirements and Installation

This class not only reviews the similarities for damper requirements (and exceptions), it also discusses the different types of fire-resistance rated construction, incidental use groups. Also highlighted are common requirements for damper installation and firestopping of ducts when dampers are not required. Based on the 2006 Michigan Mechanical Code and 2006 Michigan Building Code

Residential Plan Review

Following the 2006 International Building Code Residential Plan Review document, we will review building planning requirements, foundations, floor, wall, and roof construction. Based on The 2006 Michigan Building Code.

Inspecting Fire-Resistant-Rated Construction

An in depth look at Chapter 7 of The Michigan Building Code 2006 with emphasis on common items which need to be addressed during the inspection phase.

Commercial Non-Structural Plan Review

We’ll cover, step by step, methods to review plans for commercial buildings using the Michigan Building Code 2006.  Subjects include; height and area limitations, fire-resistance-rated construction, fire protection and means of egress.

Accessibility 2006

We not only look at the scoping and technical requirement of the MBC 2006, we also review the ICC/ANSI A117.1 standards.  The introduction offers brief explanations of ADA, HUD/FHA requirements.

Means of Egress

This class deals with the major requirements for means of egress including calculating occupant loads, egress width, emergency and exit lighting, exits door, stairs, handrails and guards, exit access, corridors, vertical exit enclosures, horizontal exits and exit discharge.  We also touch on the specific egress requirements for assembly uses.

Inspections of Large, Multi-Use Building

After a brief discussion of record keeping and report writing, we will review the inspection requirements for large multi-use buildings containing residential occupancies.  We will review common problems found within these types of inspections.

Michigan Rehab Code

This class reviews the requirements of the Michigan Rehab Code for Existing Buildings for the 3 levels of renovations, change of occupancy, additions and historic buildings.  We will also review an example of the performance compliance alternative.

Residential Builders CC1

This class which meets the requirements for State of Michigan Continuing Competency requirements for Residential Builders starts with a review of the new changes in law for residential builders.  We then cover MIOSHA regulations for jobsite ladders and scaffolding.  Finally we review the changes in the Michigan Residential Code 2006 and common mistakes found.
